Area 6 of 7 · Fraud calls and digital arrest
Handle Fraud Calls
A scam call works only while you stay on the line. You are always allowed to hang up.

Learn: five habits
Inspector Abhay explains what to do, and why it works.
You are allowed to hang up
End any call that scares or hurries you. Never stay on a call while you open a banking app or install anything.
Why: No real officer or bank will punish you for ending a call and calling back.
There is no "digital arrest"
If a caller says he is from the police, CBI, customs or a court and keeps you on a video call, disconnect.
Why: No agency in India arrests anyone over a video call, and none asks you to move money to a "safe account".
Call back on the official number
Use the number on the back of your card, on your passbook or in the official app. Never use a number the caller gives you.
Why: If the call was real, the official number will confirm it. If it was a scam, you have just escaped it.
Agree on a family code word
Choose one word that only your family knows. Ask for it when "a relative in trouble" calls for money.
Why: A voice can now be copied from a short video clip. A code word cannot.
Report the number
Block it, and report it on Chakshu at sancharsaathi.gov.in.
Why: Reports get scam numbers switched off, which protects the next person.
Red flags to remember
- A caller from the "police", "CBI", "customs", "RBI" or "TRAI" who wants money
- "Your number or Aadhaar is linked to a crime"
- "Stay on the video call and do not tell anyone"
- "Press 1, or your number will be disconnected"
- A relative in trouble who cannot talk for long
